In 2008-09 season, we celebrate the 100 years of this great university and 50 years of Department of Theatre (now the Dept of Theatre and Filming), founded by Professor Dorothy Somerset in 1958. And as we do so every year, we're celebrating the special alchemy of theatre in its many forms, across the ages and around the world.

We open with a special event, This Neck of the Woods, new work created by Theatre professors Tom Scholte of UBC Vanvouver and Neil Cadger of UBC Okanagan, performed by students of both campuses. Then Professor Stephen alloy opens the season proper with the stage version of Mervyn Peake's sensational Gothic fantasy novel, Gormenghast.

We're especially excited to showcse our enormously successful alumni. John Gray and Eric Peterson wrote and originally performed the musical phenomenon Billy Bishop Goes to War, which won the Governor General's Award for Drama, as did playwright Kevin Kerr's Unity (1918). The plays are staged by two of the most exciting young directors in Canada, alumni SArah Rodgers and Stephen Drover, respectively.

Fan not working !!!

After a hard day's work at the university, and helping me out with my courses selection, my laptop suddenly is suffering from a serious problem. The processor fan is not working and I am afraid that it will cause more and more problems. I had to log into Ubuntu and work on because Windows is damn slow with the problem peaking at this time.

The customer care service is not that great because they work with Eastern Standard Time (EST) because I bought my laptop in India and the Dell International Service team will only have to take care of my problem. I am unsure when my problem will get resolved. Oh man... My laptop is my life. It should get rectified soon...... I hope it will

Aloo masala

At last, we have prepared our fine dinner at our apartment room in Marine Drive residence. Its technically not my apartment, but mady's and we are starting to move one item after another to his apt so that we can cook and have indian food at his place. Now that we have moved considerable amount of items here, this is the time for us to try out cooking something.

Graduate Student Centre

Every graduate student will frequent this place, not because of the sexy receptionist, but the offers and meetings that they conduct too often that makes UBC much more livable place, and enjoyable. The GSS, as it is usually called is the centre where people who are new entrants to the university come to register for any new events that will be held within or outside the campus.

It is located at the far end of the Main Mall (opposite to the direction where the Thunderbird Residence is) near the Canadian Flag. It is the intersection of East Mall and the small lane connecting it with the Main Mall.

Like any other part of UBC, this building is surrounded by all greenery and high rise apartments on one side. Just as this picture depicts the backside of GSS, it is beautiful and green ( atleast during this season).

The Main mall is the place everyone would be, in particular, every new student would be, because when you get lost, you would turn up somewhere in that road. It is the backbone of UBC which connects most important halls, buildings and labs which are situated on different blocks on either side of Main Mall. Some of the buildings which are there in the Main Mall are Kaiser Building (ours!!) MacLeod building and Forestry to begin with. These are located at the furthest end near Agronomy mall.
Until now, I have seen the sunny part of UBC with all the trees full of fresh leaves, and warm ground and occasional rainfall. But during winters it will be totally different, like what is shown here. In just two months it will be the case all around Vancouver. I will be posting more soon...

Smoking Lemma - Part 4 - Never Say Fag Again

Rehab.. Rehab.. Rehab. I was fed up with the mockery of all those gulls around who made the worst out of me. And this was when i entered the 3rd stage of Smoking, a stage most people in this community are. The "Trying to Quit Smoking" stage which happens to be existing for a longer duration than you can possibly expect. May extend lifelong too......
The picture on the left became most inspiring which was a dreadful sight once. Like most quitters across the world, I started reading Docus on Cancer Causes and Prevention. Occasionally would regret the fateful day at the beach had not happened at all. Smoking has taken its toll which instigated me into the creation of smoking lemma which is of 3 stages of smoking life....
1 Non Smoking/ Passive Smoking
2 Chain Smoking
3 Trying to quit
Try to be in the first stage itself or else you will be in the last stage for ever!

I call this as lemma for it leads to complex theories such as

someone putting a lit fag in your mouth, watches you struggle with fear......
you trying the taste of it alone.......
frequenting smoke shops with more friends....
introducing smoke to a friend.......
getting amazed by the improvement made by the friend within a couple of weeks, and feeling a sense of pride.......
trying to quit after one month and advising the fellow smokers not to, and getting a tight slap from one of your so called students in smoking.......
getting back to sense after a month and getting a relief with a small puff after a month-long abstinence........
continuing the smoking on for ever.........
getting a cold and being unable to stop abruptly.......
cold turning into a heartburn and leaves you helpless........
going to a doctor and the secret breaks to the family..........
with everyone knowing you smoke, you take liberty in smoking as and when possible........
Getting back to the routine smoking.......

Smoking Lemma - Part 3 - My First Puff and GF Muff

I proved that fact, and followed the guidelines . Damn ! tears rolled out of my eyes and i coughed like hell... It is said by the learned that " First Puff is the Worst Tough one" and I felt it was true to an amazing accuracy. I looked up, eyes bright as ever, mind clearer, and worries flying back with the song "Aria by Lisa Gerrard" heard inside my soul. That was the day I became a man.
From then on , No Looking Back.....

Next Week : Same Place : Same Time : I was there, sitting besides my new girl, facing the wide expance of the ocean, with head pointing upwards, not hearing wat the stupid partner blabber (interesting on her part) just because i emptied my purse at The Subway.

There was a big cloud right above me, made of the smoke out of my Davidoff. I prefer to stick to the brand, for some saint said, " Thou will get cancer soon for thee change the brand of thy smoke" and i stick to it. What if I don't get it everywhere, man I am an Indian... go get a Milds, as for the worst case. So calm and satisfied when I'm alone with a pack, or at least a couple of fags. And this temporal silence shattered by this violent rocking by none other than the prick in the flesh beside me. who happened to say something for the past half an hour. "WTF bitch, i'm tryin to relax" was the last words I ever spoke to her.. And like this "Poof" my only gf is gone! Like the wind!

And this was the time which left me and my fag into wilderness which did much damage to the soul rather than my lungs. It had changed me from a mild and silent person to a harder, rougher, impatient and crude one. And its never the same old me again......

Smoking Lemma - Part 2 - Smoke Shop Memories

Our hero gets his pack of Lites, apparently to show the opulence, ultimately resulted in his bankruptcy. Puff after another, trying to hold down his urge to cough, as it would more than causing cancer, causes embarrassment. After a single smoke he gets dizzy turns to the crowd(us) and posed haughtily as if achieved a First Class Merit. This was his next reaction, a helpless situation which calls us for his help. This was a two-some problem which he had. One, his world splits into two with the cocaine intoxicating his insides. Two, an almost full pack of lites glaring at him. Lucky for him a couple of the so called trying-to-quit chain smokers were among our group.

The best smoker among us, happens to be the youngest of all starts his course of advice to the amateur smoker who lost the girl, in the smoke! And here comes the second joker, another non-smoking despo, badly wishing for the smoke inside him. God must have mercy on that poor soul... Grabs the pack n artfully places a smoke on his mouth, feels the smell pretty good and inviting, with a jeering look at the innocents which includes me. That was it! Nothing more he knew, or tried to know atleast. And there were serious discourses from the nerd around, on lung cancer, dick cancer and so on. Who cares, for there are experts beside and a bum who made himself a fool just minutes back and me staring silent.

Lit by this expert smoker who just finished his detailed advice, which brought back the fool to this world leaving him in a state to have his second lites:not so good for the first time. The second fool who has now blown his first puff right from the mouth itself glares at the young fellow who returns a disapproving look , grabs the smoke n shows how its properly done. As like usual he asked me to demonstrate, for i was a quick learner.

In depth understanding is vital prior to, during the course of and post smoking and quitting. And it does no harm, nor any good defying the sacred threads binding the mind and soul with the 3.5 inch Davidoff. "It was supposed to be the second-most safest smoke next to Marlboro Lites" says an amateur smoker who happens to be one of the first followers of my laws of smokes... I say " Yo dawg, any puff, even lites can kiss yaw lips to death even sooner than Motha fairy herself waltzes her fine ass n titties to suck yaw brain out n fiddle wit it".

It all starts with a nice cool breeze, gentle sundal smell wafting on the air, marching astride with the best buddies aside, preferably at the best place in town for a great evening walk/talk. And suddenly this damn thing happens to one wierdo guy who happens to be having more experience on the account at hand, Chain Smoking. He sees a hot young person of the opposite sex which invites him to prove his presence. Guess what he does, after all those Rajini movies he finished enjoying?

Gets on this funky coloured roadster, and off with a zoom, he wheelies about a couple of yards and to his disappointment and bad luck trips and the source of this chaos looks at him and forced a snicker! The theory of controversy comes into play, he recovers and considers her seeing him a positive sign. Dusts off his shirt, resumes his stride towards the nearest Smoke Shop; asking (rather ordering) me to lift the bike , and it happens to be my own bike and i take real care in recovering it.

Cigarette Warnings

Friends, please take this warnings seriously and not as a joke. Quit Smoking.

Recent Canadian government research has shown that cigarette smoking not only impairs sexual ability, it actually causes shrinkage of the male sexual “equipment.”

Wow! If that is true, we need to get the word out ASAP! Maybe the warning on the cigarette packs should be updated to reflect this new information. How about something like this:

* Warning!: These cigarettes are king size — how about you?

* Warning!: Smoking sections in restaurants aren’t the only things getting smaller.

* Warning!: If you don’t reduce your smoking, your smoking will reduce you.

* Warning!: Smoking may lead to ridicule on your honeymoon.

* Warning!: Smoke rises, but you may not.

* Warning!: Second-hand smoke can be harmful to children — That is… if you’re capable of conceiving any.

* Warning!: Cigarettes get shorter the more you puff — so do you.

* Warning!: How can you enjoy a smoke afterwards, if there’s no before?

* Warning!: The only thing left after a smoke is a dead stub.

* Warning!: Don’t throw lit cigarettes in the urinal — you might not have the range to put them out.
